PSC Lecturer Posting

The Kerala PSC's Lecturer list has seen some activity recently with one appointment being made: that of Ajith Kumar, who had been in CESS as a DST Young Scientist running his own project on deciphering heavy mineral provenances. With Dr SN Kumar leaving University College on a deputation as Jt Commissioner of Entrance Exams, and with the sudden demise of Salim sir, two vacancies definitely exist now. Vikas, now in CGWB, may or may not be interested, while Anto Francis would be.

Anto would be good addition to Geology faculty of Kerala colleges if he joins, esp. with his expertise in Metamorphic Petrology. His PhD was with the stalwart, the late Dr AS Janardhan of Mysore University.

Some of the people on the list are old war horses, like for instance Dr.J.Udaya Kumar. He’s one who has seen the ups and downs of life and took a hard earned PhD from Kariavattom in Economic Geology, under Dr. Raju Philip. At a time when analytical facilities were absolutely non-existent in the department he managed to look into the genesis of the U-bearing QPC of Chickmagalur, with dogged determination and with some analytical help from AMD. A paper on the thesis got published in the first issue of Gondwana Research. Right now “Ookku” lectures at the TKN Engg College, Quilon.

The passing of an era

Dec 28th: the day Salim sir of Geology department, University College, silently slipped into a sleep from which he never woke up from. The heart attack that took his life didnt bring him much pain, and from a jovial man at 8:30 in the morning to a free soul at 9:00 was a shock. He had a cup of hot tea at the NSS camp organised by Jai Kiran at the VHS School Vattiyoorkavu, joked about a bit, offered to buy food for all in the camp, listened to some music with JK on the car stereo, and promised to be back on the 31st, the day the camp was to close. But that was never to be. After a short breakfast at home at 9:00 he slumped on the sofa, got up, walked to the bed, relaxed and never woke up.
