Masters of Environmental Sciences,
Policy and Management (MESPOM)
Programme aims
Career opportunities
MESPOM is a new programme launched in 2005 with support from the European
Commission. It combines the best elements of the well-established Masters
programmes: Pollution and Environmental Control at the University of Manchester,
Environmental Management and Policy at Lund University and Environmental
Sciences and Policy at CEU. Altogether, more than 2000 students from more than
70 countries have graduated from these programmes in the last 20 years. They are
currently employed, in almost equal shares, in governments and international
organizations, consultancies and private sector and academia. Many have chosen to
return to their home countries whereas others stayed in Europe, particularly for
pursuing PhD degrees.

Financial aid
European Commission’s Erasmus Mundus scholarships are
available to outstanding candidates from non-EU
countries. CEU offers additional financial aid options for
EU students.
Programme structure
The two-year (120 ECTS credits) programme consists of three
taught and one research semester. The first two semesters
are delivered at CEU with contribution from Lund,
Manchester and the Aegean. The mandatory courses during
the first semester include Introduction to Environmental
Sciences, Introduction to Environmental Policy and Thought
and Introduction to Environmental Management. ore than
20 elective courses are offerred in the second semester,
including, for example, Sustainable Energy Solutions,
Environmental Impact Assessment, Environment and Producer
Responsibility, Water Resource Management, GIS, Biodiversity
and Conservation. A course on Ecosystems Management
delivered jointly with the University of the Aegean involves
a field trip to the Island of Lesvos in Greece.
During the third semester students choose whether to
specialize in Environmental Sciences and Pollution Control at
the University of Manchester, or in Preventive Environmental
Strategies at Lund University. The fourth semester includes
independent thesis research which can be hosted at any of
the MESPOM Consortium partners.
Throughout the course, in addition to their academic work
students develop research, communication and other
professional skills, learn to orient themselves in European
and worldwide networks of environmental institutions and
elaborate career strategies. Many students combine thesis
work with internships in international organizations,
governments, NGOs or the private sector.

This Erasmus Mundus Masters course aims to prepare future leaders
to analyze and manage environmental issues in various social
contexts. There is a growing need worldwide for such internationally
trained specialists able to link advanced scientific knowledge to
effective policy and management responses. MESPOM builds on more
than 50 years of combined academic excellence in postgraduate
environmental education of its four partners: the University of
Manchester (focus on environmental sciences and pollution control),
Lund University, Sweden (focus on environmental management in
industry), Central European University (CEU), Hungary (focus on
environmental policies) and the University of the Aegean, Greece
(focus on ecosystems management). Successful graduates receive
Master of Science degree from the four participating universities.
Entry requirements
Applications are welcome from candidates with a good first degree (Bachelor or
equivalent with minimum 3 years of university studies) in a subject related to
environmental sciences, policy and management such as biology, geography or
chemistry, engineering, management or economics. Candidates with other first
degrees are also considered if they show commitment to environmental issues,
usually through work experience. All candidates should demonstrate proficiency
in English. Admission is based on the academic and intellectual excellence of
applicants as well as their motivation and prior experience. Admission to MESPOM
is highly competitive. A successful applicant has typically graduated with excellent
grades from a good university and has some experience of voluntary or
professional environmental work. She or he understands global environmental
challenges and has a clear commitment to contribute to their resolution. See
www.mespom.org for details.

High F in Palghat Groundwater

Shaji E, the versatile groundwater guy, with a PhD in the Metamorphic Petrology of cordierite gneisses of the Kerala Khondalite Belt, and who is also a one time Young Scientist Awardee of the Kerala Science Congress, of CGWB, Trivandrum has just now published a paper on the high-F content in the groundwater of Palghat in Current Science. He says that
" The country rock, hornblende biotite gneiss, has been identified as the source for this high fluoride for both phreatic as well as deep aquifers. Now how does this fluorine get released from these hard crystalline rocks? Here man and nature conspire: the water is alkaline and depleted in calcium, it resides for a fairly long time in the aquifer zone, and the intensive irrigation in the area creates the additional stress that leads to the dissolution of fluorine-bearing minerals and release of F into the groundwater."

IntroductionEarth Science is a broad and multi-disciplinary scientific area. Mathematical and conceptual models have been traditionally used to describe, understand, and predict various processes occurring in different compartments of the Earth (the mantle, aquifers, reservoirs, landscapes) as well as processes involved in earth observation. In recent years, with the development of new measurement methods, continental and global observation networks, efficient and robust computational methods, and advent of powerful computers, it has become more and more possible to develop and test complex models for describing and predicting the system earth.
Prestige Master System Earth ModellingUtrecht Prestige Master’s programmes are linked to research areas in which Utrecht University holds a leading position worldwide. Students participating in these programmes will be closely involved in the research activities of these internationally acclaimed research groups.
The focus of this prestige master is to provide a firm basis for the systematic and scientific study of the System Earth using advanced models. This includes underlying physical, chemical, and biological principles as well as numerical methods for solving differential equations and analysis of data. Specific areas of application include:
- flow in the mantle
- land surface processes
- imaging of Earth interior
- flow and transport in soil and aquifers
- tectonics
- land degradation
- river basin hydrology
- river delta evolution
- role of vegetation and organisms in sedimentary processes
- global geochemical cycles
The researchers at the Departments of Earth Sciences and Physical Geography play a leading role in the world of earth sciences. They have a long and successful record in the development of both conceptual and mathematical models, observation techniques, and methods of analysis of large data sets. Experts from various areas of geochemistry, (bio)geology, geophysics, hydrology, and physical geography join forces to offer a high-quality multidisciplinary programme. The students will have to spend part of their study at a foreign partner university where a co-supervisor will contribute to the MSc research programme. The students who graduate from the Prestige Master System Earth Modelling are in principle able to finish their PhD studies in three years.
Possible areas of specialisation within the Prestige Master System Earth Modelling are:
- Biogeology
- Geochemistry
- Geology
- Geophysics
- Hydrology
- Physical Geography
